The Detox Diet - A Thousand Year Old Tradition

By Athena Hunter

Much has been written about the detox diet (detoxification) over the decades. It seems the past ten years, roughly, have seen an explosion of these diets. The basic principle is the same across all of them, and that is to use foods (or liquids) to help your body get rid of toxins. First, we must caution you and suggest you talk to your doctor before embarking on any kind of detox diet. Many people turn to this overall approach when they want to lose weight. While it is possible to achieve that, we feel the loss will be temporary for a variety of reasons. We will talk more about the detox diet in the rest of this article.

Your body is amazing. Without stopping, it continually throws off the toxic substances that your body is accumulating every minute of your life. Your digestive system, kidneys and liver are the main systems that work non-stop to keep the toxins from building up in your body. So it's easy to understand that any detox program will benefit these organs and their ability to do their work. The goal of this diet is to strengthen your body's ability to do what it knows how to do. When your body's systems become stronger as a result of detoxification, it can heal faster and your health and strength are improved.

You will derive many rewards from following a detox plan. You will most likely be less tired, your digestion will be improved, any bloating or swelling or puffiness in your body may be eliminated, and your immune system will be stronger so it can do its work better. The juice fast is considered a detox diet even though you will probably lose weight on it, too. This diet has you drinking only fresh juice made from vegetables or fruit. On this one, we would definitely recommend you are cleared to do this safely from your doctor. There are many different types of juices available, and each one has its own set of benefits and uses. Some examples are wheatgrass juice, beet juice and water. We would also highly suggest you buy your vegetables from an organic health or grocery store. The reason for this is organically grown foods will be certified free of pesticides and other undesirable chemicals.

What you may experience as a result is more energy, better digestion, stronger immune functions, decreased or elimination of bloating plus other benefits. One thing that is becoming well-known is that the body is healthier when it is alkaline, rather than acidic. Achieving this state of overall bodily pH is the goal of some detox diets. Liquids, including primarily water and herbal teas, form the basis of many detoxification diets that will clean out your whole system. The list of possibilities is actually quite long in the herbal literature. When looking for information on natural health and herbal remedies, go to your local health food or supplement store. One thing that you will find with the use of herbs, is that many have properties that will cause detoxification.

Sickness in the stomach, feebleness and nausea are some known examples. Strange side effects as those are scary, which is precisely why some go to an expert setting when going through detox. Obviously, people that struggle with problems medically, need to confer with their practitioner before beginning even for example, a short time without food. The good that comes from a correct diet detox that has a good and safe recovery period are in existence. Carelessness would only be putting a person in danger as you can see.

Detoxifying diets have been around for many centuries in all types and in all countries. This is admittedly an area of alternative medicine, or approaches, that has caused some controversy with established Western medicine. Should you decide to explore this, make certain you do so within the safe and slower guidelines.
