The Benefits Of Using A Detox Diet

By Sandy Rutherforde

Right now, there is plenty of hype surrounding the benefits of the so-called detox diet. These benefits range from weight loss to eliminating harmful toxins from your body. The simple truth is that a number of those claims are legitimate, though some aren't, and that means you should not believe all of those statements, regardless of how enticing they may seem to be.

For one thing, there's no single or best detox diet. Rather, there are various diet programs which are intended to help your body detoxify. Without naming any certain one, a few involve eating only fruits and vegetables, in the form of either juices or shakes. Other regimens promote special formulations or powders, along with vitamins and minerals. There are various other forms and variations available.

Considering the idea of detoxing, however, it needs to be noted that our body already does this on a daily basis. In fact, our liver and the entire digestive system is involved with removing waste products. Even our skin gets rid of some of them in the form of sweat. What any detox diet can do is simply to enhance the process, or to help it along. Depending on our lifestyle, we can oftentimes overwhelm our body's natural waste handling systems - thus the necessity for detoxification.

As a result, since we are unable to truly stay away from ingesting, inhaling, and applying substances which contain toxins on our body (to achieve this, we'd need to live in a sterilized world), detoxification really does have a part to perform. In fact, medical specialists find very little wrong with undertaking it every so often. Nonetheless, there is currently no advised frequency, or even an officially recommended diet, to help you detoxify. Large-scale studies relating to this are basically lacking - therefore, you see all of the media hype.

Furthermore, there's no single test that can show you if you have been effective in eliminating those toxins. Even when you shed extra weight, it doesn't mean all the toxins are gone. True, there are blood tests that can show you a reduction in lactic acid and also other chemicals, but they are expensive, inconvenient, and not routinely done by most people.

So since detoxification has its benefits, and there are no guidelines for it, you could simply begin by altering what you eat and drink. Antioxidants from fruits and vitamins will always help you, as they are medically proven to prevent cancers and aging. Also, raising your intake of fiber and water is also going to help, since they permit regular bowel movements and dilution of toxins. They also make it possible for a lot more sweat production to eliminate even more harmful toxins. Finally, simply cutting down your intake of processed foods and carbonated drinks should help, as you lower the preservatives and chemicals which enter your body. There's really no requirement to go crazy on a detox diet.
